Up until a short time ago, online operations were concentrated into the classic working hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., all the transactions were made personally, by phone or on paper while afterwards the data were inserted into the computer. Even when a fire, a hurricane, an earthquake or some other natural disasters put a system out of order for a few days, the operations could often continue manually.
The system maintenance was not a problem; it was just enough stopping operations after the working hours, followed by database backup, installing a new version or updating the hardware.
Nowadays, it is different because employees, customers and suppliers, all interconnected, are able to reach the company from all over the world 24h 7x7. The end of the working day does not exist anymore and interruptions are not localised anymore.
